Content I’ve been reading - Apr 17
So week 4 of lockdown and I think I’m getting more into the swing of it. At heart I’m a bit of a homebody anyway so not going out isn’t the biggest issue for me.
Communications in times of Crisis
The Community PR Initiative / Government Communications Service portal
As marketing communications in construction and real estate tend to be among the first casualties when tough times descend there are some amazing volunteering programmes springing up. The Community PR Initiative matches PRs with voluntary charity roles and the Government Communications Service also has set up a new portal to highlight new roles within Government departments – both perm and interim. These schemes are designed for people to still use their skills and add value while the world is in a state of flux due to things like reduced hours, jobs furloughed or redundancy. I’m certainly looking to add volunteering to my mix in the coming weeks.
Marketing Strategy Covid 19
Nice piece from Joe Austin about Covid 19 Marketing Strategy and how we should look at 3 areas – review, reshape and reconnect. Joe’s piece was inspired by a piece written by Mark Ritson in Marketing Week following on from his Covid 19 webinar last week.
Don’t Back Down! Here’s Why (and How) Your Law Firm Can Keep Marketing During a Crisis
A professional services / legal one but this has to be one of the most informative communicating during Covid articles that I’ve read for a while. The article advocates continuing marketing but gives good hints and tips on how to adapt your approach to reflect the current crisis. So many good ideas that are applicable to all sectors including architecture, engineering and construction.
Real Estate and Construction
How Coronavirus will change the way we work forever
This one is a bit of a long read from Estates Gazette written by Emily Wright that I stumbled across this week . It sparked off lots of ideas about next steps and things that businesses can positively do/think about in preparation for a post Covid 19 real estate market.
It also touches on how this pandemic has enhanced the technological adoption curve - people who normally would use busyness as their excuse for not bothering to learn new systems are having to make the time to do so to be able to functional at all.
Gems such as Charlie Wade, UK managing director of leasing platform VTS saying:
“The situation we are in is unprecedented,”
“What’s clear is that we are in a place where we are all having to understand and simultaneously adopt technologies so that we can work effectively because we simply have no other choice.
It also touches on the digitisation of asset management as asset managers realise that managing sites remotely is indeed possible. Another area covered how the lockdown may impact demand for office space as companies realise that working remotely can work and we’ve all had to overcome all the traditional hurdles for home working.
Careers
Squiggly Careers podcast from Amazing If - How to stay resilient
Amazing If are the awesome duo of Sarah and Helen who also have recently launched a book about squiggly careers that is currently sat on my coffee table waiting for me to read.
Anyway, they have tons of tools and resources about all things career related so it’s worth following them on Instagram and LinkedIn too. I went to a meet up event of theirs last year and it opened up a whole new world to me - I just love all that they do.
I completely relate to their squiggly career concept that there’s no job for life and that careers take many twists and turns – I know mine certainly has. Amazing resources and their podcasts are a treasure trove to delve into.
Is this working? – Let go of productivity guilt with Harriet Minter
I only found this podcast series last week and this is the second one I’ve listened to so they’re certainly doing something right. This week Anna Codrea-Rado and Tiffany Philippou had Harriet Minter, journalist, broadcaster and coach, on to talk about not feeling guilty if you’re not as productive at the moment. As she quite rightly said there’s a whole lot of uncertainty and anxiety going on as we all navigate our way through a global pandemic. Well worth a listen for some positive inspiration.
